Verification Process Question and Answer

I HAVE BEEN SELECTED FOR VERIFICATION. WHAT DOES THIS MEAN TO ME?

The Department of Education will select individual FAFSA applications for a review process called verification. Individuals can be selected for one of the five verification categories. Applicants selected for verification will need to complete a verification worksheet for 2014-2015.  The student will be notified via email that their FAFSA has been selected for verification.  The email will include a checklist and the Verification Worksheet.

WHAT OTHER DOCUMENTS WILL BE NEEDED?

  • Verification worksheet (Emailed to the student)
  • Copies of 2013 IRS Tax Return Transcript(s) (Student and Parent, if applicable)
  • Copies of all 2013 W-2's (Student and Parent, if applicable)

HOW DO I REQUEST AN IRS TAX RETURN TRANSCRIPT?

There are two ways tax filers can request a 2013 IRS Tax Return Transcript:

Online/View and Print

  • Go to www.irs.gov
  • Under Tools, Select "Get Transcript of Your Tax Records"
  • Under Get Transcript, Select "Get Transcript Online"
  • Click on "Create an account"
  • After you enter your information, you will be sent an email with a confirmation code
  • Enter your conformation code from your email. This step is time sensitive
  • Continue to enter your personal information
  • Select the reason you are requesting a Tax Return Transcript (Higher Education/Student Aid)
  • Under Return Transcript select "2013"
  • A paper transcript will appear in PDF format for you to print (You may have to turn off your pop-up blocker in order for you to view and print your transcript)
  • Sign out

 

Online/Request to be Mailed

Go to www.irs.gov

  • Under Tools, Select "Get Transcript of Your Tax Records"
  • Under Get Transcript, Select "Get Transcript by Mail"
  • Enter your personal information
  • Select Type of Transcript "Return Transcript"
  • Select Tax Year "2013"
  • A paper transcript should be mailed to the requestor within 5 to 10 days

 

I DO NOT FILE A TAX RETURN. WHAT INFORMATION DO YOU NEED FROM ME?

  • You will be required to complete the verification worksheet and attest that an 2013 IRS 1040/1040A/1040EZ has not and will not be filed. Copies of all W-2 forms from all employers must be submitted to the Office of Financial Aid. However, you will be required to provide our office with a letter from the IRS stating that you are not required to file a 2013 Income Tax Return if the income amount exceeds the minimum filing requirement as defined by the IRS.

 

WHEN SHOULD I SUBMIT THE VERIFICATION PAPERWORK?

  • You should submit all requested documents to our office as soon as possible or within 30 days of receiving your notification letter. Please be sure to include the student's First and Last Name on all documents.
