Poet, haiku specialist coming to the Forum

Laurinburg, N.C. - Poet and haiku specialist Thomas Heffernan is the featured reader at the St. Andrews Writers' Forum Thursday.

He plans to share a few new poems regarding his youth in Massachusetts and his more recent life in North Carolina while also promising a couple haiku.

Heffernan has taught at colleges and universities in the United States, United Kingdom and Japan over the years, most recently at St. Andrews, and has published widely since 1960.

Of his 10 books and chapbooks, the first, Mobiles and Other Poems, was published in 1973 by St. Andrews College Press. His The Liam Poems received the Roanoke-Chowan Prize. He received an NEA Literary Fellowship in Poetry and Fiction awarded through the Southern Arts Federation and prizes from the Poetry Society of America, Crucible, and Poetry Center of the Southeast at Guilford College. His haiku have received several Mainichi Awards a Japan Airlines award and, in 2006, the Kusamakura Grand Prize which included a trip to Japan.

Free and open to the public, the Writers' Forum begins at 8 p.m. in Orange Main Lounge.
