In their own words...
"My time here has instilled within me a special kind of character, one that only comes as a result of a community geared toward opening your mind... not just filling your mind with more information."

Helping people all in a day's work for Watts

Laurinburg, N.C. - For David Watts, the best part of his day as a campus safety and security worker at St. Andrews University is walking around the campus.

"I really enjoy meeting and greeting people," said Watts. "I'm a people person and I feel like if I can help the day go by faster by helping people and greeting them with a smile, then it makes it a better day for everyone."

Watts returned to St. Andrews in March after prior stints in campus safety and as a service aid for students with disabilities.

"I really enjoyed working with those students," Watts said. "I first came back to work security in 2007 and enjoyed that time as well. I kept an eye out and when there was another opening for security I applied.

"I really enjoy working at St. Andrews," he added. "A job is what you make of it and I really enjoy the people here. I like to meet and greet people and put smiles on their faces."

One of the people Watts gets to share a smile with is Director of Housing Will McPhaul.

"I've known Will for a long time," Watts said with a laugh. "We would bounce together at clubs down in McColl. We both enjoy having fun but we can get serious when we need to."

In addition to his work at St. Andrews, Watts customizes vehicles and cleans out foreclosed homes for banks to put on the market.

"I had one truck that I did and won close to 30 trophies from sound and car shows," Watts said. "I do most of the customization myself, but will work with some specialists to get the best quality product. I might keep a vehicle for three months but it will be done completely when the owner comes to get it."

That commitment to quality is something he applies to his work at St. Andrews as well.

"I try to stay in all the buildings and keep things safe," Watts said. "That's what being in campus safety and security is all about. Keeping the campus safe and secure for all the students and employees."
