The St. Andrews Pipe Band is one of the university's most visible organizations and has become one of the top competing pipe bands in the southern United States.

SAU Pipe Band finishes second

The St. Andrews University Pipe Band finished second at the Charleston Scottish Games at Boone Hall Plantation in Mt. Pleasant, S.C., on Saturday.

“The band placed second behind the Atlanta Pipe Band in a very close contest,” said Pipe Major Bill Caudill. “I was very pleased with our standard of play and the sound we were able to produce. I’m very proud of the work put in by the members of the band to make that possible.”

In addition to the strong band performance, individual band members earned recognition in the solo competitions. Sophomore Dalton Marshall was named Grade IV Senior Piper of the Day for the first time with his brother, freshman Stuart Marshall as the runner up for the award. The brothers both ended the day with one first place, one second place and one fourth place. Band Drum Sergeant, senior Billy Gehringer, won the Amateur Grade I Drumming Award.

Community band members Patrick and Evan Johnson finished first and second in Grade IV Junior Piper of the Day respectively.

“The band’s next competitive appearance will be at the local Scotland County Highland Games,” said Caudill. “It will be a three-band competition in our Grade and we hope to have a lot of support at this local appearance.”

The Scotland County Highland Games take place October 5 – 7.
