"As a first generation Latin American, it was different coming here, but I soon realized that I could just be me. St. Andrews is a school for people who like small classes and a close community."

SAU Freshman coordinates Instagram/Photography Show

Laurinburg, N.C. – Students, faculty and staff walked through the Vardell Gallery Monday evening for the first Instagram and Photography Contest.

Combining the social media photography projects with traditional photography for an art show at St. Andrews University was the idea of freshman Spencer McAfee of Charlotte.

“(Art Professor) Stephanie McDavid was looking for ideas to put a show in the gallery,” said McAfee, an equine business management and therapeutic horsemanship major minoring in art. “I realized that a bunch of people on campus use their phones to take campus photos so I thought that having Instagrams in a show would be a good opportunity to get participation from all areas of the community.”

McAfee admits that photography is the art medium she is most comfortable with having been a photography student in high school.

“This was a chance to see everyone’s style,” she said. “It was hard to get the pictures out of the students to start, but when we offered monetary prizes it upped the participation.”

The show was open to students, faculty, staff and alumni, although the top three prizes were awarded to students. Karlee Arnold won with her entry Heavenly Sweet with second place awarded to Becca Yuswak for Heart of Winter. Patrick Doyle’s Ducks at Sunset earned third place.

“I am so pleased, not only with the turnout at the show, but the overwhelming response of staff and students who participated,” said McDavid. “There is so much talent on this campus that we need to showcase more often. I am delighted with Spencer’s work on this show. It was her idea and she is so full of energy and creative ideas that she followed through from concept to reception.”
