Distinguished Poet coming to SAU Writers’ Forum

Laurinburg, N.C. – Two-term Gilbert-Chappell Distinguished Poet for the Eastern Region of North Carolina John Hoppenthaler will read at the St. Andrews University Writers’ Forum Thursday.

Free and open to the public, the weekly Forum begins at 8 p.m. in Pate Main Lounge on the University’s campus.

Hoppenthaler has two published books of poetry, Anticipate the Coming Reservoir and Lives of Water. His poetry has appeared in many journals, anthologies and textbooks including Virginia Quarterly, Southern Review, Christian Science Monitor, September 11, 2001: American Writers Respond and A Face to Meet the Faces: An Anthology of Contemporary Persona Poetry.

His essays, interviews and reviews have appeared in a variety of journals, such as Arts & Letters and Tar River Poetry. He served as poetry editor at Kestrel for 11 years.

In addition to his work as the Gilbert-Chappell Distinguished Poet, Hoppenthaler has been honored with an Individual Artist Grant from the West Virginia Commission on the Arts, and grants from the New York Foundation on the Arts and the New York State Council on the Arts.

Hoppenthaler is an assistant professor in the Department of English in the Thomas Harriot College of Arts and Sciences at East Carolina University.
