"As a first generation Latin American, it was different coming here, but I soon realized that I could just be me. St. Andrews is a school for people who like small classes and a close community."

Coffman attends NAOSMM Conference, Trade Show

Niagara Falls, NY - Director of Logistics for St. Andrews University Rooney Coffman attended the 40th Annual Nation Association of Scientific Materials Managers (NAOSMM) Conference and Trade Show July 29 - Aug. 2.

The annual Conference and Trade Show is held at different locations throughout the country each summer and features seminars designed to keep attendees current on trends and issues of the industry. Presentations were given this year by Robert Emery, vice president for safety, health, environment and risk management at The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston, Russ Phifer, executive director of the National Registry of Certified Chemists and Karen Smith, laboratory safety Specialist at the University of California, Merced. Topics included Global Harmonization System Labeling Requirements, preparing labs for OSHA audits, and effectively conveying the value of the safety efforts in the lab.

“The trade show vendors and equipment are the best part,” said Coffman, who received a Sigma-Aldrich Travel Grant to attend the event. “In a rural location like ours, it is difficult to convince vendors to come to us, but an event like this provides the opportunity to see 60 to 75 vendors in one location. One vendor had a 40 foot tractor trailer set up like a full scale lab.”

Coffman also enjoyed the opportunity to network with vendors and the other conference attendees.

“With all the meetings, sessions and events, we only had two meals on our own the entire time,” Coffman said. “I enjoy this opportunity each year and plan to return to the event in Indianapolis next year.”

NAOSMM is a professional organization of laboratory managers, science storeroom personnel, teaching lab coordinators, purchasing personnel, and chemical safety officers that was founded in 1974. Membership includes representatives from academia, manufacturing, research laboratories and pharmaceutical companies.
