Remembering Barbara Blake '52

Barbara Carter Blake '52, a member of the St. Andrews Presbyterian College Board of Trustees since 1996, died on May 15, at her home in Pinehurst, N.C.

Known for her gentle demeanor and incredible grit, Barbara had significant influence in many venues. A strong supporter of the college, as well as the Presbyterian church, she spent much time promoting activities for these arenas and for the betterment of her community.

President Paul Baldasare remarked, "The most important lesson I learned from Barbara was the value of hope and optimism in an otherwise chaotic, uncertain and at times unfair world. Hers was not a naive hope, nor Pollyanna optimism. It was a hope and optimism borne of a deep and abiding faith in the innate goodness of others, the idea that hard work would ultimately pay off, and a belief that faithful, committed folks working together, sharing the responsibility and credit for that work could change things for the better."

Barbara is survived by her husband, Harris, and daughter and son-in-law, Joy and Luke Donat.
