Gissurarson paced nine Knights individuals in the one-day event by carding an impressive one-under par 71 on the 6,391-yard, par-72 layout. The English duo of junior Jack McClelland (Guilford, England) and David Clarkson (Long Ditton, England) finished in a pack of seven golfers that finished tied for second with matching rounds of two-over 74.
Gissurarson’s first collegiate medalist honor was his third straight top-five finish this spring. Gissurarson has a 72.8 stroke average over that span of five rounds.
McClelland and Clarkson both posted their lowest competitive round of the spring season with their 74’s.
St. Andrews did not compete as a team in the 18-hole tournament but if you add junior Rafael Garcia’s (Puebla, Mexico) four-over 76 to the Knights top three scorecards, SAPC would have won the seven-team tournament by six strokes over the host Hurricanes with a team score of 295.
Garcia earned a top-ten result, finishing tied for ninth, with his 76. Freshman Jack Hunter (Carshalton Beeches, England), senior Scott Bennett (Laurinburg, N.C.), and sophomore Eric Hartstein (Nappanee, Ind.) all finished in the upper-half of the field. Hunter and Bennett signed scorecards of 77 and 78, respectively, while Hartstein followed with an 80. Senior Matthew Tanea (Newark, N.Y.) added an 82 and junior Joshua McGuire (Houlton, Maine) concluding the Knights play with an 84.
St. Andrews will next compete in the Bearcat Invitational hosted by Lander University at the Greenwood Country Club (Greenwood, S.C.) on Monday & Tuesday, March 29-30.
