With the score tied 7-7 early in the fourth, senior Kyle O’Brien (Whitby, Canada) scored the go-ahead goal for the Golden Lions at the 12:17 mark. O’Brien’s tally started a three-goal outburst by Dowling in an 84 second span that gave the visitors control.
The Lions (1-0) begin the season with a win on the strength of a seven point performance by O’Brien, who finished with five goals and two assists. Senior Brandon Bergersen (Severn, Md.) and freshman Kevin Sabo (W. Hampton Beach, N.Y.) both had four points for Bryant by providing two goals and two helpers apiece.
Freshman Riley Fink (University Park, Md.) led the winless Knights (0-3) with three points including a pair of goals. Classmate Bobby Murray (Miami, Fla.) also found the back of the net twice.
Dowling jumped out to a 5-0 lead with all five scores in the first quarter but St. Andrews surged back with a 6-2 second quarter to cut the deficit to one, 7-6, at the midway break. The Golden Bears looked to take a two-goal advantage into the intermission but Fink scored with 1.4 seconds on the clock on a feed from senior Kyle Carnaggio (Pasadena, Md.) to pull within one.
St. Andrews scored the only goal of the third quarter to even the deadlock the scoreboard heading into the final frame. Inside the four minute mark, junior Harrison Young (Upperville, Va.) successfully cleared the ball for the Knights and then set up Murray for the equalizer on the transition.
Dowling responded with the first six goals of the fourth quarter to secure the victory before Young scored in the final minute to close the final margin of victory to five.
The Golden Lions took more shots, 36-27, and picked up more ground balls, 48-32, while dominating face offs by winning 19-of-25. St. Andrews had 10 extra-man opportunities but only scored on two. Dowling was 1-for-3 on the EMO.
Both team’s goalies had six saves with Lions’ sophomore Ryan Dougherty (Port Jefferson St., N.Y.) earning the win and Knights’ junior Patrick Wade (West Windsor, N.J.) getting tagged with the loss.
Six players accounted for Dowling’s 13 goals including two by sophomore Vito DeMola (Holtsville, N.Y.). Sophomore defender Matthew Lauria (Babylon, N.Y.) had game-highs of 10 ground balls and five caused turnovers.
Young added five ground balls and five caused turnovers to his one goal and one assist.
