PEMBROKE, N.C.—Junior James Walls (Bear Creek, N.C.) won the 5000-meter run and the St. Andrews Presbyterian College men’s track & field team had top-three finishes in 9-of-11 events at the Braves Classic hosted by UNCP on St. Patrick’s Day.

Walls was the first of nine endurance runners to cross the finish line in the 5000 with a new personal record (PR) time of 16:27.01, which was his first collegiate win in the event.
SAPC successfully competed against the host Braves, Shaw University, Belmont Abbey College, and unattached individuals as the Knights three new school records and tallying 14 new PR’s.
Three other Knights competed in the 5000 with junior Jon Lecker (Minneola, Fla.) recording a PR time of 17:28.56. Junior Tommy Wilson (Salisbury, N.C.) and senior Brad McKee (Kings Mountain, N.C.) followed in 17:44.81 and 18:39.80, respectively.
In the much shorter events, sophomore Antonio Moffitt (Raleigh, N.C.) made a dramatic track & field debut by breaking a couple SAPC school records in the sprints. Moffitt was the runner-up out of 13 entrants in the 100-meter dash, bolting to a finish of 11.39 seconds. Moffitt added a third place showing out of 13 sprinters in the 200-meter dash, darting across in 22.93 seconds.
Freshmen Domonique Holliday (Aurora, N.C.) and Derrick Richardson (Mt. Gilead, N.C.) also competed in both events. Holliday set new PR’s of 11.71 (100) and 23.25 (200) to grab sixth place in each race. Richardson had a PR time of 11.81 seconds in the 100 while finishing the 200 in 24.04 seconds.
The trio of Moffitt, Holliday, and Richardson teamed up with senior Charles Phillips (Decatur, Ga.) for a third place finish in the 4x100 meter relay. The quartet set a new SAPC record, handing off the baton successfully completing the loop in 44.47 seconds.
Senior Matthew Rogers (Eatonton, Ga.) broke his own school record in the hammer throw to underscore a pair of Knights throwers. Rogers propelled the hammer an even 37.00 meters, which was the third best distance in the finals.
Rogers had a trio of top-three results with his highest finish coming in the shot put, taking second overall out of 11 participants with a launch of 13.02m, his best mark of the year. Rogers added a third place finish in the discus, slinging it 30.80m.
Fellow senior Allen Kiefer (Raleigh, N.C.) earned the Knights fourth top-three finish in the throwing disciplines, taking third in the javelin with PR toss of 40.81m. Kiefer also had a finals heave of 10.60m (PR) in the shot put.
Junior Josh Pickett (Asheville, N.C.) led SAPC in the middle distance events, finishing third in the 1500m run and fourth in the 800m run. Pickett scurried around the oval twice in 2:04.68 to finish in the upper half of the field in the 800 while leading a group of six Knights home in the 1500 with a lap leading time of 4:20.34.
Walls was four seconds behind Pickett in the 1500 at 4:24.80 to post fourth place out of 11 harriers. Wilson and Lecker followed with PR times of 4:36.92 and 4:42.34, respectively. Freshman Will James (Mount Pleasant, S.C.) set a benchmark time of 4:46.31 and McKee pursued in 4:51.61.
Rounding out the meet for the Knights were Hollins (5.41m) and Holliday (4.28m) in the long jump.
St. Andrews will next compete in the Asics Winthrop Invitational hosted by Winthrop University on Friday & Saturday, March 26-27 in Rock Hill, S.C.
