SAPC track & field once against tests itself at a Division I hosted meet

ROCK HILL, S.C.—Junior Tommy Wilson (Salisbury, N.C.) knocked 45 seconds off his 10000-meter run PR to finish second place, highlighting competition for the St. Andrews men’s and women’s track & field teams at the Asics Winthrop University Invitational this past weekend.

Senior Charles Phillips (pictured) was the busiest Knight at the 2010 Asics Winthrop Invitational, competing in four events including helping St. Andrews set a school record in the 4x100. Phillips also competed in the 200m dash, triple jump, and long jump.

Wilson made the 24-plus trips around the oval at the Irwin Belk Track & Field Complex in 36:00.62, to claim runner-up honors behind a Division I runner from Davidson University.

The Knights also posted a third place showing in the in the 4x100m relay. The quartet of freshman Derrick Richardson (Mt. Gilead, N.C.), senior Charles Phillips (Decatur, Ga.), sophomore Antonio Moffitt (Raleigh, N.C.) and freshman Domonique Holliday (High Point, N.C.) set a new SAPC school record by getting the baton across the finish line in 44.29 seconds.

Moffitt also broke his own school record in the 100-meter dash by one-hundredth of a second. Moffitt bolted down the straightaway in 11.38 seconds to finished 25th out of 35 speedsters. In the 200, Richardson was 32nd out of 45 entrants with a PR time of 23.42. Phillips also ran in the 200, stopping the clock in 25.43.

On the women’s side, St. Andrews only competed in one running event. Freshman Joanna Lindstrom (Ukarumpa, Papua New Guinea) led a pack of six Lady Knights to the finish line in the 1500m run with a PR time of 5:59.56. Lindstrom finished 25th out of 34 runners. Junior Danielle Martin (Newport, N.C.) posted a time of 6:16.21 while sophomore Rebecca Maye (Zebulon, N.C.) followed just three seconds later at 6:19.68. Senior Laura McDowell (Raleigh, N.C.) ran a PR time of 6:58.42 while senior Lauren Crabb (Kalamazoo, Mich.) and junior Amelia Shill (Moore, S.C.) recorded times of 7:03.69 and 7:04.80, respectively.

Senior Tyler Lee (Hillsborough, N.C.) and junior Amy Tripson (Pittsburgh, N.C.) were the only other Lady Knights to compete on the weekend in four throwing disciplines. Lee was 18th overall out of 20-plus entrants in both the discus throw (25.07m) and the hammer throw (20.16m). Lee also had a 7.61m heave in the shot put. Tripson followed in the shot put with a distance of 6.80m while also chucking the javelin 18.69m.

Junior Josh Pickett (Asheville, N.C.) led the SAPC men in a couple mid-distance races. Pickett finished in the top half of the field in the 800-meter development run with a time of 2:03.86. Pickett then led six Knights to the finish line in the 1500-meter run with a time of 4:29.40. The trio of junior James Walls (Bear Creek, N.C.) and seniors Jon Lecker (Minneola, Fla.) and Brad McKee (Kings Mountain, N.C.) all finished within four seconds of each other. Walls led the pack at 4:40.07; Lecker followed with a PR of 4:41.67; and McKee clocked in at 4:43.83. Freshman Will James (Mount Pleasant, N.C.) and Wilson also competed in the 1500, with respective times of 4:51.74 and 4:55.45.

Walls tackled the Division I dominated 5000-meter run, placing exactly in the middle of 41 harriers at 21st overall with a time of 16.27.12 (less than a second off his PR). Lecker recorded his second PR of the meet, with a time of 17:20.76 in the 5000, while McKee capped the Knights running at 18:41.79.

Phillips had two respectable showing in the jumping realm, including a 15th place result out of 25 leapers in the long jump. Phillips landed 6.04 meters from the start line while sophomore Domonique Hollins (Columbia, S.C.) also competed in the long jump with a measurement of 5.17 meters. Phillips added a 12.06m distance in the triple jump.

The senior duo of Matthew Rogers (Eatonton, Ga.) and Allen Kiefer (Raleigh, N.C.) provided the SAPC men with all of its arm strength in four throwing categories. Rogers tied for seventh out of 20 entrants in the shot put with a chuck of 13.65m. Kiefer followed with a distance of 9.10m. Rogers also finished in the top half of the 30-competitor field in the discus with a toss of 35.24m while adding a 33.70m mark in the hammer throw. Kiefer concluded the throwing competition with a javelin throw of 37.77m.

St. Andrews next competes in the Lenoir-Rhyne PowerSox Invitational on Saturday, April 10 in Hickory, N.C.
