The primary goals of Knights Fest 2008 were all met successfully including fundraising activities for both the SAPC athletics department and the Susan G. Komen Foundation while also bringing alumni, parents, and Knights fans back to the campus.
The weekend started off with the 5th Annual Knights Scramble Golf Tournament that featured 10 different hole sponsors at Cypress Creek Golf Links on Friday afternoon. Sixteen teams competed for the scramble championship honors with the foursome of Terry Rogers, Steve Morrell, Ted Rogers, and Stewart Redding claiming the first place prize.
A Breast Cancer Walk/Run started a full schedule of events on Saturday as 60 participants took off on the 5k course around the campus at 10 a.m. James Edward Wesley III won the men’s race and Kim McDaniel won the women’s race. All proceeds from the walk/run went directly to Passionately Pink for the Cure through the Susan G. Komen Foundation.
The St. Andrews volleyball team followed with a 3-0 victory over Conference Carolinas rival Converse College while also participating in Dig for the Cure, another fundraiser sponsored by the Komen Foundation.
"We want to thank everyone who supported us again this year for our Dig for the Cure match,” said Dan Kreiger, head volleyball coach and co-organizer of the weekend. “All of the activities over the weekend were great. We will continue to work to make next year's events even better.”

The St. Andrews soccer teams followed with a non-conference doubleheader against North Greenville University on ‘Senior Day’. The Lady Knights started off the afternoon with a 1-0 shutout over the Crusaders while the men’s team capped a perfect day with a 4-2 win against NGU. The SAPC soccer coaching staffs honored eight seniors from both the men’s and women’s soccer teams after the women’s game.
Other activities on the campus of St. Andrews included a blue/white softball game in the morning and an alumni baseball game in the afternoon. The Knights baseball team had about 30 alumni and 30 alumni family members return for the annual game.
"Despite the weather, we had a good turnout of alumni and families at our annual fall alumni game,” said second year baseball head coach Keith Williams. “It was great to see familiar faces from last year and to hear their reactions to our field improvements as we are striving to return the program to its past successes."
The fun-filled weekend was capped with a Dinner Auction in the Belk Center on Saturday night. A reception and silent auction started the evening followed by the dinner that was held for more than 60 people. The silent auction was a successful fundraiser for the St. Andrews athletics department with a wide range of items having been auctioned off including an autographed Boomer Esiason NFL football; A Day at the Races and tickets to the Preakness; a David Beckham jersey; wine tasting at Cypress Bend; a free night’s lodging and dinner for 2 at Comfort Inn and McDuff’s; and golf green fees at Scotch Meadows and Legacy. Everyone in attendance was treated to a barbecue dinner that was donated by Sodexo, Smithfield’s Chicken ‘n Bar-B-Q, and Golden Corral.
“The weekend was a great success!” said Stevan Hernandez, head women’s soccer coach and co-organizer of the weekend. “There was a great turnout for the all events from the golf tournament to the walk/run, baseball, softball, soccer games, volleyball, and dinner auction. The athletic programs received tremendous support from alums, parents, SAPC faculty and staff as well as the Laurinburg community. We hope to make Knights Fest a bigger and better event next year.”
Director of Athletics Brian Mand added, “We hope to continue Knights Fest as an annual fundraising event for the athletics department and Susan G. Komen Foundation with the goal of involving all of the athletic teams in the activities and events and to have even greater participation and support from the St. Andrews and Laurinburg communities.”
