LAURINBURG, N.C.—Brian S. Mand, Ph.D., the director of athletics at St. Andrews Presbyterian College, has resigned his position citing personal reasons, announced Robert Hopkins, vice president for academic affairs and dean of the college.
Mand has served two years as the college’s athletic director.
“We deeply appreciate Brian’s service to St. Andrews and our students,” said Hopkins. “He came here with the goal of emphasizing the academic growth of each student-athlete and we are grateful for his efforts.”
Mand previously served as the senior associate athletic director at the University of Cincinnati.
“I am appreciative of the opportunity provided by President Paul Baldasare and Dr. Hopkins to allow me to serve as the Director of Athletics at St. Andrews for the past two years,” said Mand. “However at this time, I feel it is in my best interests to pursue professional opportunities elsewhere while leaving St. Andrews with a sense of pride for the progress and accomplishments that have been made by our student-athletes athletically, academically and in the campus and Laurinburg communities.”
At St. Andrews, he oversaw 16 Division II athletic teams. Athletes at St. Andrews account for about 40 percent of the student body. He also served as assistant professor of sport studies and coordinated teaching assignments of coaches in the sport management and physical education areas.
“We have been fortunate to have Brian’s leadership and his support over the past two years,” said Baldasare. “We wish him the best as he pursues other career opportunities.”
During his tenure as the Knights athletic director, Mand revived the Knights Club and added a corporate sponsor component.
Hopkins said the search for Mand’s replacement will begin immediately.
Mand earned his Master of Arts degree in physical education from The Ohio State University and then completed his Ph.D. degree in physical education at Florida State University in 1994.
