The Knights (1-0-0) season-opening victory provided first year head coach Leto Alibaruho with his first collegiate victory after serving as an assistant at St. Andrews for the past two years.
“It was nice to get the first win out of the way and not have to think about if for long,” said Alibaruho. “Hopefully, we can get win number two tomorrow and win the tournament.”
St. Andrews scored both of its goals in the first half. Humphrey started the scoring by taking a shot that deflected off an Indians defender and into the net. Senior Mickey Padron Jr. (Virginia Beach, Va.) assisted on Humphrey’s goal. Kiyabu added an insurance goal later in the first scoring on an assist by senior Jamin Ferris (Durham, N.C.).
Senior goalkeeper Nick Stevens (Kernersville, N.C.) stopped every Catawba shot on goal in the 90-minute shutout.
Alibaruho added, “It is fantastic to start the season off with a win. We executed our game plan well and dominated most of the possession that ended in a decent result.”
St. Andrews concludes its play in the 2008 Mount Olive Sleep Inn Classic on Saturday when they hit the pitch against non-conference foe North Georgia College & State University at 5:00 p.m.
