No. 3 Lees-McRae Blanks Knights Soccer

BANNER ELK, N.C.Senior Tamas Szalai (Monroe, N.Y.) took half of the St. Andrews Presbyterian College men’s soccer teams shots against No. 3 nationally ranked Lees-McRae College in a 4-0 Conference Carolinas loss on Saturday afternoon.

David Palmer had two goals as the Bobcats remained perfect on the season at 9-0 overall and 5-0 in the conference. The Knights fall to 3-6 and 1-3.

Dale Parker scored the first goal in the 22nd minute when Jamie Bladen flicked a ball to Richard Guffens who headed a perfect pass to Parker for the one-timer.

Palmer scored his first goal in the 34th minute to give the Bobcats a 2-0 lead. Palmer received a quality cross from Sam Kennedy on the front post and buried it for the goal.

Lees-McRae took the 2-0 lead into the intermission, and added their third goal five minutes into the second half when Luke Perry tucked in a Berin Boracic corner inside the near post to extend the lead to 3-0.

Palmer scored his second goal when Guffens laid a pass off to Perry who found Palmer on the far post for the goal to give the match the final score of 4-0.

Palmer paced the Bobcats with four points, and Luke Perry followed with three points. Richard Guffens added two assists in the match.

Sean Paradise earned the win in goal on three saves including a pair of stops on shots by Szalai. Paradise has four shutouts on the season.

Junior starting goaltender William Williams (Denver, Colo.) made six saves in the SAPC loss. Freshman backup Andrew Pelfrey (Mount Airy, N.C.) recorded two saves and did not allow a goal over the final 20 minutes in his first collegiate appearance.

The Bobcats outshot the Knights 20-6 and held a 16-0 corner kick advantage.

St. Andrews concludes a three-game road swing at league rival Mount Olive College on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
