WINGATE, N.C.—Sophomore hitter Lauren Billo (Orland Park, Ill.) provided host Wingate University with six kills, five aces, and four digs in a 3-0 (25-18, 25-9, 25-11) non-conference volleyball victory over visiting St. Andrews Presbyterian College on the second day of the 2008 Wingate University Invitational Saturday morning in Cuddy Arena.
The Lady Bulldogs (2-0), who are receiving votes in the CBS College Sports Network/AVCA Division II National Poll, had a well-balanced attack that hit .253 for the match. Freshman Heather Bolwerk (Appleton, Wis.) led the Lady Knights (0-2) with seven digs, three block assists, and two kills.
Wingate, the defending South Atlantic Conference (SAC) champions and preseason favorites, broke an early 3-3 tie in the first set with a 9-3 run to take control of the opening frame. The two teams played the rest of the first set even with the Bulldogs prevailing by seven points. Junior Sophie Schellenberger (Dresdeu,Germany) had five kills on seven attempts and freshman Elizabeth Willis (Raleigh, N.C.) had 10 of her 24 assists in the first set as the hosts took a 1-0 lead.
Schellenberger finished with match-highs of seven kills and six block assists.
A senior Ashley Craven (Southern Pines, N.C.) kill capped a 13-2 Wingate run to start the second set and the Bulldogs cruised to the 16-point victory. Wingate took a commanding 2-0 set led in the match by hitting .333 in the second stanza.
St. Andrews sophomore Leah Davison (Palos Verde Estates, Calif.) ripped a kill to give the visitors an early 4-1 edge. The Lady Bulldogs quickly responded with a 12-0 run to take a 15-2 lead. Billo has five aces during the run as Wingate took control of the third and final set. A freshman Elizabeth Willis (Raleigh, N.C.) kill finished the match as Wingate won the third set by 14 points and completed the sweep.
Billo and junior Jacki Emmenecker (Perrysburg, Ohio) each ripped six kills for the Bulldogs while junior Chelsea Cancelliere (Richboro, Pa.) scooped up a team-high seven digs.
Sophomore Kelly Williams (Laurel, Md.) tied Bolwerk with seven digs for SAPC. A trio of Knights had four kills including Williams, junior Galina Podolsky (Raleigh, N.C.), and freshman Chelsea Taylor (Fayetteville, N.C.). Junior Jaime Hayes (Gulf Breeze, Fla.) added 13 assists.
St. Andrews concludes its tournament play later today against Saint Augustine’s College at 3:00 p.m. while Wingate wraps up the Wingate Invitational against Lander University at 5:00 p.m.
