LAURINBURG, N.C.—Senior Galina Podolsky (Raleigh, N.C.) had a season-high 16 kills for host St. Andrews Presbyterian College in a 3-1 (25-17, 25-14, 25-27, 25-23) loss to the lone remaining undefeated team in Conference Carolinas play, Mount Olive College, on Wednesday evening in Harris Court.

Senior Alicia Mote (Miami, Fla.) recorded a double-double by spiking a match-high 21 kills and making 11 digs as the Trojans improved to 7-12 overall and 7-0 on the conference with their sixth straight victory. The Lady Knights avoided the sweep with an exciting third set but still dropped their fifth consecutive match, falling to 7-10 overall and 2-6 in the league.
Mote had 21 kills and five errors on 37 swings for a .432 hitting percentage. Classmate Racey Bartley (Jacksonville, N.C.) added 15 kills on a .256 clip as Mount Olive recorded a .237 team hitting percentage. Bartley had a match-high four total blocks.
St. Andrews scored eight points in a row on senior Courtney McDonald’s (Leander, Texas) service rotation to grab an early 10-3 lead in the first set. The early run was highlighted by four Knights kills that were assisted by senior Jaime Hayes (Gulf Breeze, Fla.). Mount Olive quickly responded with an 8-1 run to tie the first frame at 11-11. The opener stayed deadlocked at 16-16 before the Trojans rattled off nine of the last 10 points to claim the victory by eight.
Mount Olive maintained the momentum hitting .370 in the second set to pull away for an 11-point win to take a commanding two-set advantage in the match. Senior setter Joanie Werling (Purcelleville, Va.), who recorded a match-high 41 assists, had all three of her service aces in the second stanza.
The Knights prevented the sweep by winning an exciting third set that featured 11 ties and five lead changes. The Trojans extended play with side-outs on St. Andrews first two attempts at set point but with the score deadlocked at 25-25, Podolsky crushed two straight kills to force a fourth set.
In the final set that featured 15 ties, neither team could pull away to more than a three point lead. SAPC was attempting to force a decisive fifth set holding onto a late 22-20 edge but MOC finished off the match by winning five of the final six points.
Knights’ sophomore Heather Bolwerk (Appleton, Wis.) put down nine kills while the freshman duo of Elysia Tiegs (Woodstock, Canada) and Kelly Stine (Fort Collins, Colo.) both netted four kills. Hayes finished with a season-high 26 assists. Senior Courtney McDonald (Leander, Texas) posted a team-high 17 digs while sophomore Erica Davis (Tulsa, Okla.) scooped up eight.
A trio of Trojans finished with double-digit digs including senior Caitlin Skislak (Gulf Breeze, Fla.) with a team-high 14 digs and junior Christiane Maul (Auerbach, Germany) adding 12 lifts.
St. Andrews next visiting Conference Carolinas rival Converse College on Friday at 6:30 p.m. Mount Olive hosts Pfeiffer University in a match-up of the league’s top two teams on Friday at 7 p.m.
