WILMINGTON, N.C.—Junior Alexandra King (Tucson, Ariz.) and sophomore Anna Egeln (Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla.) paced the St. Andrews Presbyterian College women’s cross country team in the squads first race of the 2009 season at the Adidas Seahawk Cross Country Invitational hosted by UNC Wilmington on Friday evening.
King and Egeln crossed the finish line around the 5,000-meter UNCW Cross Country Course within seconds of each other. King led the Lady Knights in her first race in a Royal Blue & White uniform with a time of 21:50.08. Egeln clocked in less than 13 seconds later at 22:02.90.
SAPC competed in a very difficult race to start the season finishing in sixth place with 161 points. The top-three teams are all NCAA Division I institutions. The host Seahawks won the race with 25 points, East Carolina University took second with 42 points, and Campbell University was third with 66 points.
King and Egeln finished in 41st and 44th place out of 69 total competitors, respectively, with 35 of the top 40 runners representing D-I institutions.
Senior Heather Jackson (Green Creek, N.C.) was the third SAPC harrier to complete the endurance race with a time of 23:52.62 in her first collegiate race. Junior Danielle Martin (Newport, N.C.) and sophomore Rebecca Maye (Zebulon, N.C.) completed the Knights team scoring finishing in a four second period. Martin posted a time of 25:36.10 and Maye logged a time of 25:39.51.
Rounding out the competition for the Lady Knights were senior Lauren Crabb (Kalamazoo, Mich.) with a time of 26:26.68; sophomore Amy Tripson (Pittsburg, Pa.) at 28:21.00; and senior Laura McDowell (Raleigh, N.C.) at 28:27.84.
St. Andrews next competes in the Guilford Cross Country Carnival on Saturday (Sept. 19).The women’s 6k race at the Meadows Cross Country Course is scheduled to start at 11:15 a.m.
