VASS, N.C.—Sophomore Amy Driggers (Wallace, S.C.) finished in the upper half of the field to lead the St. Andrews Presbyterian College women’s golf team to a fifth place finish at the 2009 St. Andrews Spring Invitational at the Woodlake Resort & Golf Course on Monday & Tuesday.

Sophomore Amy Driggers (pictured) leads the Lady Knights with a 90.4 stroke average after four tournaments including a 13th place finish in the St. Andrews Spring Invitational.

Driggers and classmate Mariann Stark (Virginia Beach, Va.) had the Lady Knights top two results as the 32-player field battled harsh winter conditions on the 5,943-yard, par-72 Arnold Palmer layout.

St. Andrews finished in fifth place out of six teams with a team score of 861 (437-424). Saint Leo University won the 2009 team title with a 670 (348-322), which was 30 shots clear of runner-up Anderson University with a 700 (356-344). Mount Olive College claimed third at 726 (384-342), Erskine College followed in fourth at 759 (394-365), while Limestone College rounded out the field with an 899 (458-441).

“Mother Nature entered the tournament with frigid temperatures, snow flurries, and howling winds,” said SAPC second year head coach Lisa Becka. “By the end of the last round, her game started to warm up!”

Driggers used a strong final round to climb up to 13th place with a 36-hole total of 184 (96-88). Stark continues to improve knocking 10 strokes of her two-day total from a year ago in much tougher conditions on the same course with a 200 (107-93).

Driggers has turned in rounds under the 90-stroke plateau in four of her eight competitive rounds in the 2008/09 season. Stark’s 93 on Tuesday was her low round of her second season.

Senior Katie Wright (Waterloo, N.Y.) provided the Knights with a 234 (117-117); sophomore Sam Frazer (Goldsboro, N.C.) finished with a 243 (117-126); and sophomore Lindsey Gates (Santa Taula, Calif.) concluded play at 346 (180-166).

Anna Riss (Saint Leo) won the individual medalist honors with an 11-over par 155 (79-76). Riss was the only player in the field to fire two rounds in the 70’s. Kristin Moberg (Mount Olive) finished eight strokes behind Riss in second place with a 163 (85-78).

The St. Andrews women’s golf team will next compete in a one-day, tri-match against Hollins University and Franklin & Marshall College on Sunday, March 15 at the Deercroft Golf & Country Club in Wagram, N.C.
