LAURINBURG, N.C.—Trailing by eight goals heading into the final 10 minutes, St. Andrews Presbyterian College made things interesting with six consecutive goals but Queens University of Charlotte scored two of the final three goals to squeak out a 15-12 Conference Carolinas women’s lacrosse victory on Sunday afternoon.

Freshman Megan Jolly (pictured) led the Knights with five points against Queens University of Charlotte that featured a hat trick and two assists.

Senior Kelley Duffey (New Hope, Minn.) and sophomore Brittany Philip (Painted Post, N.Y.) helped the Royals (4-7 Overall, 2-0) remain undefeated in league play with seven points apiece. Philip scored a game-high four goals and added three assists while Duffey had a hat trick and four helpers.

Junior Kim McDaniel (Joppa, Md.) and freshman Megan Jolly (Waterloo, N.Y.) both recorded hat tricks, but the Lady Knights (4-6, 2-2) were unable to win a third straight game. Jolly had a team-high five points with two assists.

Queens jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first nine minutes on tallies by sophomore Shannon Casey (Bel Air, Md.) and Philip but McDaniel responded for St. Andrews with a pair of goals in a 90 second span to knot the score for the only time at 2-2. Queens regained the lead for good with five unanswered goals by a quintet of Royals over an eight minute span. After two more Knights goals, Philip scored the final goal of the first half in the last minute to extend the Royals lead to four, 8-4, at halftime.

Casey had both of her goals and her assist in the first half.

Queens looked to put the strangle hold on St. Andrews after the intermission, outscoring the Knights 5-1 over the first 20 minutes of the second half to take its biggest lead of the day at 13-5. However, a junior Brett Vyverberg (Pittsford, N.Y.) free-position goal with 9:21 remaining sparked a valiant comeback attempt that was highlighted by a trio of goals in the 55th minute.

Sophomore Chelsea Ross (Newark, N.Y.) capped a 7-1 run by the Knights with an unassisted goal with 78 seconds ticks to go that got St. Andrews to within two (14-12), but freshman Brittany Barnwell (Lorton, Va.) won the ensuing draw control and Queens maintain possession for majority of the final minute. After a yellow card in the final seconds, freshman Caitlin Miller (Oceanville, Del.) put the exclamation point on the Royals win with a goal with three-tenths of a second on the clock.

Senior goalkeeper Rebecca Markle (Hampstead, Md.) made 14 saves to earn the win in net for Queens. Junior netminder Morgan Achilles (Geneva, N.Y.) made eight of her 12 stops in the second half, helping St. Andrews make its rally.

Queens held a 39-34 shot edge while SAPC scooped up six more ground balls, 29-23. Both teams won 14 draw controls and 22 turnovers.

Knights’ freshman Victoria Bickett (Lexington, Ky.) and sophomore Anna Egeln (Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla.) both had one goal and one assist for the hosts. Ross rattled home two goals while junior Allie Faulhaber (Apex, N.C.) chipped in with one goal.

Junior Caitlin O’Rourke (Winter Springs, Fla.) matched Casey with two goals and one assist. A quartet of Royals scored one goal including Miller, Barnwell, junior Alison Doron (Zionsville, Ind.), and freshman Caitlin Miller (Oceanville, Del.). Junior Beth Janaskie (Salisbury, Md.) also found the scorebook with an assist on Miller’s last second tally.

St. Andrews plays its home finale on Wednesday, when the Knights host No. 10 nationally ranked Pfeiffer University at 4 p.m. Queens entertains league rival and No. 4 ranked Limestone College on Thursday at 6 p.m.
