LAURINBURG, N.C.—Junior Brad McKee (Kings Mountain, N.C.) had an impressive pin fall for host St. Andrews Presbyterian College in a 33-17 loss to East Region foe Belmont Abbey College on Wednesday evening in Harris Court.

Junior Brad McKee (pictured) recorded his most impressive win of the season with a 4:26 pin fall over an Abbey wrestler that was more than 20 pounds heavier than him on Wednesday.

The Crusaders took the lead in the opening match and maintained a slim lead throughout until pulling away late with three straight forfeit wins.

The Abbey, ranked 10th in the East Region, finishes the 2008/09 regular season with a 3-12 dual match record while 15th regionally ranked SAPC concludes its third regular season at 1-13. Both teams will spend the next week preparing for the 2009 NCAA Division II East Regional hosted by Mercyhurst College in Erie, Pennsylvania on Friday & Saturday, February 27-28.

Freshman lightweight Shane Summerlin (Savannah, Ga.) gave the visitors an early 6-0 lead with a first period pin fall over freshman Matt Fletcher (Stephens City, Va.). Summerlin downed Fletcher in two minutes and 34 seconds.

Sophomore Casey Gashaw (Laurinburg, N.C.) trimmed the deficit to one-point with a 20-4 technical fall victory at 133-pounds. Gashaw used a takedown and a near fall in each period over freshman Colby Yates (Gainesville, Ga.) en route to his 13th victory of the season. Gashaw has won four straight dual matches.

Freshmen Jake Calvin (Winter Haven, Fla.) and Ross Patterson increased the Crusaders lead to 12-5 with a pair of wins by decision at 141 and 149. Calvin defeated freshman Dan Butcher (Westwood, N.J.) with a 5-2 decision. Calvin scored his points with two takedowns and with riding time. Patterson used four takedowns en route to his 10-3 win over sophomore Troy Baranik (Laurinburg, N.C.).

McKee once again pulled the Knights to within one point with a second period pin fall. McKee, normally a 133-pound grappler who moved up a couple weight classes, was able to stun freshman Ian Kelly (Buffalo, N.Y.). Kelly was leading 2-0 after the first period but McKee chose to be on top to start the second frame. Kelly was close to escaping several times but McKee kept pulling Kelly back down to the mat and finally pinned him at the 4:26 mark. McKee, who is the Knights most experience grappler, capped his third regular season in a Royal Blue & White uniform with his third pin fall victory of the year.

Freshman Chris McClafferty (Coral Springs, Fla.) provided the Crusaders with their third win by decision at 165-pounds to wrap up matches that actually hit the mat. Freshman Mike Frazzitta (Fayetteville, N.C.) had a 1-0 lead midway through the second period but McClafferty came up with a take down in the final seconds of the middle stanza to catapult into the lead before pulling away to the 7-2 win.

The Abbey picked up 18 more points with three straight forfeit wins at 174, 184, and 197. Junior Adam Phillips (Canton, Ohio), sophomore Jerami Bartley (Vasant, Va.), and senior Tim Stanton (Slidell, La.) were credit with the victories.

Knights’ sophomore Jamie Roberts (Wilmington, N.C.) concluded the evening with a forfeit win at heavyweight.
