ROCKY MOUNT, N.C.—Senior Jodi Frazier’s (Lexington, N.C.) first collegiate goal was the game-winning ‘Golden Goal’ that lifted the visiting St. Andrews Presbyterian College women’s soccer team to a 1-0 overtime victory over non-conference North Carolina Wesleyan on Tuesday afternoon.

Frazier and the Lady Knights, who improved to 1-1-0 on the season, spoiled the Battling Bishops (0-1-0) season-opener.

Senior Jodi Frazier scored the game-winning 'Golden Goal' in a 1-0 OT victory on Tuesday.

“It was nice to get the first win of the season under our belts against a tough NC Wesleyan team,” said St. Andrews head coach Stevan Hernandez. “Both teams played extremely hard on a very hot day and it was exciting to get the overtime victory against a team that has two very good forwards.”

SAPC held a 19-12 shot advantage and a 6-4 corner kick edge but were unable to break through in regulation as the Bishops goalie stopped the first nine Knights shots on goal.

“I wish we did not push it that far but it is a great thing to get the win and get our record back to five-hundred as conference play nears,” expressed Hernandez.

Knights’ senior net minder Garrison Burton (Atlanta, Ga.) made five saves in the game to post her first shutout of the season. Burton has 12 career shutouts including three straight against NCWC.

“Garrison [Burton] and our defense had a great game today,” added Hernandez. “We allowed NC Wesleyan to create some good scoring chances in the first half but she made some excellent saves to keep us in the game. Senior defender Brittany Forrest made a great goal-saving, slide-tackle late in the first half that helped us gain the momentum for the rest of the game.”

After a scoreless regulation, Frazier received an accurate pass out of the backfield from sophomore Tara Barker (Kernersville, N.C.) in the first 10-minute overtime period. Frazier trapped the ball and made a good turn towards the goal and then placed a nice chip shot that beat the NC Wesleyan goalkeeper high to end the game in the 99th minute.

“Jodi [Frazier] is playing a new position for us at forward after playing the past two years as a midfielder,” explained Hernandez. “Her first collegiate goal the day after her birthday was a good birthday present.”

Seniors Kerrie Brown (Irondequoit, N.Y.) and Myra Miller (Atlanta, Ga.), along with sophomore Sam Frazer (Goldsboro, N.C.), all had two shots on goal for the Knights.

St. Andrews next visits non-conference USC Aiken (Aiken, S.C.) on Thursday, September 11 at 4:00 p.m.
