LAURINBURG, N.C.—
Sophomore forward Shana Schroeder (Newark, N.Y.) scored a goal and had an assist to guide the St. Andrews Presbyterian College women’s soccer team to a 3-1 non-conference victory over visiting North Carolina Wesleyan College on Tuesday afternoon at the Knights Soccer Field.

Sophomore Shana Schroeder (pictured) sparked the Knights offensively with three points against NC Wesleyan on Tuesday afternoon including her first collegaite goal.

Classmate Chelsea Ross (Newark, N.Y.) added a pair of assists as St. Andrews improved to 2-0-0 on the early season. The Battling Bishops open the 2009 season at 0-1-0.

The Lady Knights came out of the gate firing taking the first six shots and scoring two goals in the opening 12 minutes.

Schroeder got things rolling for St. Andrews with the opening tally just four minutes and 33 seconds into the match. Ross crossed the ball from the left corner of the field and Schroeder finished off the play from close range. Sophomore Krystal Hedderman (Fredericksburg, Va.) doubled up the Knights lead in the 12th minute. Ross once again started off the scoring sequence by laying the ball off for Hedderman, who then ripped a 25-yard shot that went off the crossbar and into the back of the NC Wesleyan goal.

Hedderman and Schroeder led the Knights with five and four shots, respectively, while they both scored their first collegiate goals. St. Andrews maintained a 2-0 lead at halftime, outshooting NC Wesleyan 9-3 in the opening stanza.

Junior Sam Frazer (Goldsboro, N.C.), the reigning Conference Carolinas Women’s Soccer Player of the Week, scored the Knights last goal in the 59th minute. Schroeder serviced the ball to right in front of the goal and Frazer completed the play with a one-timer. Frazer leads St. Andrews with two goals on the season.

“There were some incredible goals scored today,” said Jennifer Montgomery, St. Andrews first year head coach. “I was excited to see the girls creating many chances for themselves and finding the back of the net.”

Schroeder paced the Lady Knights offensively with her three points while Ross’ two assists helped St. Andrews take command of the game from the start. Montgomery added, “Shana Schroeder did very well up top. She is a very composed player and with her goal and assist, I believe it will help set the tone for us on attack for the season.”

Sophomore goalkeeper Becca Knott (Jacksonville, N.C.) and the Knights defense looked poised for their first shutout of the season but freshman reserve Lydia Hunt (Rocky Mount, N.C.) spoiled the opportunity with a late goal in the 87th minute. Hunt fired a shot on goal that Knott was able to get a hand on but the hard attempt remained on target, supplying Hunt with her first collegiate goal. Senior Meredith Hester (Reston, Va.) was credited with an assist on the play.

Knott (2-0-0) picked up her second win on the early season, making three saves over 90 minutes. A trio of Battling Bishop goaltenders split time in net with senior starter Sarah Hess (Middleburg, Md.) getting tagged with the loss allowing the first two goals in 45 minutes of action. NCWC freshman Tiina Rastiola (Sililinjarvi, Finland) had a team-high three saves.

“Our defense had a great game leaving us close to a shutout,” added Montgomery. “Our created opportunities up top started from good distribution from the back and staying connected with the midfield. It is unfortunate we gave up a goal in the last ten, but we will take that as a learning tool and apply it to our next match.”

SAPC amassed a 19-13 shot advantage and a slight 5-4 corner kick edge.

St. Andrews will next visit No. 25 nationally ranked UNC Pembroke (Pembroke, N.C.) on Wednesday, September 9 at 7:30 p.m.
