SAU riders show skills in Raleigh

Raleigh, N.C. – St. Andrews University riders demonstrated different skills with strong success over the weekend at competitions in Raleigh.

Members of the show team competed at the North Carolina Hunter Jumper Association Horse Show. Katie Hansen and her horse Lucky were champions in the Amateur Owner division with Regina Barasch and her horse Nito earning reserve champion status. Hansen also won the Hunter Derby on Saturday night. Paula Kramer and her horse Amador were champions in the pre-adult division. Abi Skillman and Julie Griffin also earned top ribbons in the same division. Ali McGraw and Kayla McBath received top ribbons in the adult amateur division.

Also in Raleigh over the weekend was Ride-Like-A-Knight (RLAK) therapeutic horsemanship rider Josh Dazey, representing Scotland County in the Special Olympics. Riding SAU’s Red Ted, Dazey earned fourth place in Western Working Trails and Showmanship classes before earning a silver medal in Western Equitation with a pattern. He is coached by RLAK Instructor Rachel McGarvey, a junior at SAU.

“I am excited that RLAK was able to participate in the Special Olympics competition for the first time this year because it shows our dedication to improving our riders’ skills and rewarding them for their progress,” said RLAK Program Director Megan Ellis. “SONC involvement also strengthens our community ties. We hope to have an even larger team to represent Scotland County in future years.”
