SAU Western Team heading to Nationals
Laurinburg, NC -The St. Andrews University Western Team finished first at the Intercollegiate Horse Show Association (IHSA) Semi Finals at the St. Andrews Equestrian Center Saturday.
St. Andrews finished ahead of Clemson, Delaware Valley and State University of New York Oswego.
“I am thrilled to be able to host schools from all around the country and show them the true hospitality,” said Equestrian Program Director Peggy McElveen. “We have received many compliments on the quality of our horses this weekend.”
Western Coach Carla Wennberg was especially pleases with the way the team and horses performed over the weekend.
“Everyone rode super, great weekend,” said Wennberg. “The horses were wonderful even with the incredible wind we experienced Sunday. I’m excited to have a month to prepare for Nationals.”
Mark Mowbray, Logan Teeter and Michelle Hustad contributed first place finishes in the team competition.
“Carla told me don’t make any mistakes and my horse wanted to canter at the start of the extended jog,” said Mowbray of his ride. “I had to set her back before moving forward which was the right thing to do and worked for me.”
Teeter adds, “Many thanks to our wonderful coaches and team. This has taken lots of hard work and dedication.”
Austin Trockenbrot and Dugan McDermott contributed second place finishes in the team competition.
“I have two fantastic coaches in Carla and Lindsey,” said Trockenbrot. “It is really great how it all came together.”
In addition to the team’s success three individuals qualified to compete at Nationals. Hustad will join Vicki Weise and Erin Hudson.
“This amazing opportunity means the world to me,” said Wiese. “I will be forever grateful to Carla for all she has done for me.”
Hudson adds, “I am excited and ready for Nationals Boot Camp!”
The IHSA Western National Championships will take place May 1-4 in Harrisburg, Pa.
