SAU Pipe Band wins at Loch Norman Games
The St. Andrews University Pipe Band won the Grade III Pipe Band contest at the Loch Norman Scottish Games on Saturday.
“We earned straight firsts from all the judges,” said Pipe Major Bill Caudill. “We also received three above grade level marks from the two piping judges and the drumming judge. We’ve had one before but never three. The band truly put on a good so and I am very proud of their accomplishments this year.”
The excitement and success carried over to the solo competitions for the band members.
Freshman Wyatt Brown was first in Grade II March, Strathspey and Reel, earning an above grade level mark while also finishing second in Hornpipe and Jig.
Sophomore Stuart Marshall, also competing in Grade II, was second in Piobaireachd, fifth in Hornpipe and Jig and fifth in March, Strathspey and Reel.

Fellow first time competitor, junior Danny Iovino-Ortiz, won the overall trophy as a competitor in Amateur Bass. He earned first place finishes in March, Strathspey and Reel and Medley.
“I want to congratulate these students on their achievements over the past few weeks which led to their prizes this past weekend,” said Caudill. “The band will not have any further competitions as a group until the fall. We will perform at the Commencement Ceremony at St. Andrews on May 3 and say goodbye to our two seniors, Christine Harrelson and Holly Hickman.”
